I am probably revealing a level of geek about myself that I shouldn’t… but…
too late. 😀
Every year – long before I was blogging, probably since I was a kid…. I have always made the first book of the year a big deal. The first book for me had to be one I had been wanting to read for a while, one that I couldn’t wait to dig into, even with blogging – that first book excitement each year has not changed.
It is a book I really want to read – not (necessarily) a review book, a book club book or any other book that is on my TBR shelf. This one may have been purchased by me for the occasion…
Here is what I have on the possibility list:
Since meeting James Dashner this past summer and finding him to be smart and funny… I want to read him. This book has been on my shelf for probably the 3 years it has been out. Is this the time?
Can you believe I havent read The Twelve yet? Did you know this is the one book I wanted to leave New York with this past June and I did… and I have passed it around my book club but still have not read it myself? What is wrong with me????
Or Wild? Because this book makes me think of hiking and maybe someday I will go hiking for a long long time… maybe… who knows… I should read the book….
Or…. back to Gillian Flynn? She rocked my world in Gone Girl. Is it time to try another one?
I would love to hear what you are considering for the new year! What is your first book going to be?
My first book is either going to be Last Chance Summer or The Promise of Stardust.
My first book of 2013 will be CASCADE by Maryanne O’Hara because she recently gave me her book. Although I have others that have been in my to-read pile longer, this comes first for that reason.
Dark Places and Wild are on my TBR. I’m not sure which book I’ll read first in 2013 yet… I have three challenges I’m doing so I’ll pick one from there that I already have on my shelves. I’m leaning towards Atonement by Ian McEwan.
Loved THE MAZE RUNNER, as much as I adore James Dashner himself! That being said, I must read The Passage this year.
My first book for 2013? John Irving’s PRAYER FOR OWEN MEANY.
Even though The Passage scared the bejesus out of me, my first book if 2013 will be The Twelve. If I can even wait that long.
I was equally blown away by Gillian Flynn’s Gone Girl. I’ve since read Sharp Objects which was brilliant as well!
I’m right up there with you as “2013 1st Book of the Year Geek”, as I was pondering the same question today while looking through some of my stacks:)
I liked Dark Places, but they all look good.
I’m not sure what my first book of the year is going to be. I have a bunch in my house and I think I’m just going to choose randomly – kind of my reading mantra going into the new year – stop planning so much 🙂
What a cool idea! My first book is going to be Crewel by Gennifer Albin. it’s been on my TBR pile since I first heard about (WAAAY before it came out) and I got it for Christmas. 🙂
The only book on your potential list I’ve read is Maze Runner, which was good. So I’d have to recommend that one. 😉
My first book will be Map of the Sky by Felix de Palma – I loved the first book in the trilogy, The Map of Time. Also, I’m hoping my first audio will be The Twelve – waiting on the hold list from the library. 😉
I have never heard of any of them but after looking on amazon they all look like they could make interesting reads 😀 I think i need to work on my list of possiblities!
I love that you make a big deal out of your first book of the year, but I’ll probably just be reading whatever I was reading on December 31.
You should read Wild! My book club just read it and they all loved it!
I’ve been anguishing over what will be my first book of 2013. I’m thinking Anna Karenina as I am trying to read more classics. Of your choices I’ve read Wild and it was good but I didn’t finish Maze Runner. Haven’t read the others … Good luck with choosing
I haven’t decided which book to read first, but I joined the 2013 TBR Pile Challenge and will read something from that list. Dark Places is on it!
for audio, my first read will be The Crown by Nancy Bilyeau I think. In print, I’m not quite sure. I’m thinknig A Storm of Swords so I can finish well before the next season of Game of Throne starts. Or The Name of the Star by Maureen Johnson, so I know if I want to preorder book 2 in that series.
Excluding the Christmas books I will still be reading up until January 6 (Twelfth Night…I won’t be counting those as my first reads of 2013), my first read will be Les Miserables. SO looking forward to it after seeing the movie on Christmas.
Hope you and your family had a wonderful Christmas, Sheila. 🙂
A Christmas setting novel was the first book I read this year and last so I’m guessing that I’ll be reading another one for 2013. I joined the TBR Double Dog Dare so which ever book I choose it will be one on my tbr pile.
You’ve got some good ones in your possibilities. I haven’t read any of them. First book….well, it’s probably way too early for me to decide. There’s that whole impulse thing going on, you know? LOL
My plan for 2013 is for it to be the year I catch up on the classics I “should” have read a long time ago. Firmly in first place is Pride and Prejudice. My plan is one classic, then one other type of book of my choice (or out of my pile!!) I hope I can stick with it because I feel left out when people talk about books like that and I have to say, “no, I missed that one.” Any suggestions greatly appreciated!
In 2012, I read Gone Girl and Sharp Objects, so Dark Places will be happening this year, I’m sure. Also Wild…since I requested it from the library and it’s in! Off to pick it up!!
Enjoy whatever you pick.
I just started The Twelve on audio (Scott Brick reads!). My first book will probably be The Tudor’s Daughter by Julie Klassen.
I’m probably going to start off with Abby Cooper Psychic Eye by Victoria Laurie as my first book of 2013. Can’t wait!
I am hosting the Blog Hop for Jen tomorrow and this is the question 🙂 Like you I think it is a big deal also, I love the thought that goes into it.
I will reveal mine tomorrow.
You definitely chose some good books. If my reading falls into place as I have planned, I will be continuing my read of SEVEN LOCKS by Christine Wade or beginning SATURDAY NIGHT WIDOWS by Becky Aikman.
My best of 2012 are here in case anyone is interested.
Happy New Year!!

My Favorite Books of 2012
The first book I’m going to finish is going to be Middlemarch, but my first book that I will start in 2013 is definitely going to be Life of Pi – Yann Martel 🙂
I’ve just posted my books that I want to read in 2013! http://inbetweenthelines1.wordpress.com/2012/12/13/books-to-read-in-2013/
I read three of those this year (Well, I’m about two hours from finishing The Twelve right now)! Wild was at the top of my Best Books of 2012 — definitely start with that one. 🙂
I’ve started reading “Wild” by Cheryl Strayed. I love stories about walking. Bill Bryson’s “A Walk in the Woods” is one of my all time favorites. Thanks for your blog, I think it is one of the best.
To answer the question, I have no clue, but my guess is that its probably going to be Anna Karenina.
Well, my first book of 2013 is going to be “To kill a mocking bird”
I’m in the middle of three books so it will be the one I finish first: a medical memoir, a series book or a popular fiction book. My bet is on the popular fiction (Where’d You Go, Bernadette). Happy New Year, Sheila!
i want to read The Twelve next year too, Night Eternal by Guillermo del Toro and Chuck Hogan, and I wat to finish my reread of The Wheel of Time series, concluding with the last three book completed by Brandon Sanderson.
All those books look good, Sheila! If you read them all in the first few weeks of 2013, your year will start with a bang!
I’ll probably just read whatever I’m reading at that moment – reading schedule, you know! I have very little leeway after I indulged in non-scheduled books in December.
Happy new year and happy reading!
Great choices!! I’m going to end and begin with the same author, Susannah Kearsley. Right now I’m reading Every Secret Thing and then 2013 will be Shadowy Horses!
I loved Wild, but I listened to it on audio. The Maze Runner was good too, I also listened to that one. The Passage is sitting on my nightstand, and has been for a few months, so I’m notr eady for The Twelve yet. I never really thought about making a big deal out of the first book of the new year, but I like the idea!
Dark Places was good but kind of a let down after Gone Girl. Read Wild and loved it! My new years resolution is to read The Passage sometime this year so I’ll be looking to borrow The Twelve from you when you’re done with it. The book I’ll be starting with this year is Looking for Alaska because my son so highly recommended it! 🙂
You got the Twelve whenever you want it Angie 😀 Oh and John Green? Awesome!
I think about my first book of the year too – it’s important to start the year off right.
I have just borrowed from my library (don’t you just love online ebook borrowing!) ‘The Women in Black’ by Australian author Madeleine St John and have set that aside for Tuesday. Sounds like a witty summer holiday read and great way to kick off my Aussie Author Challenge.
Have a wonderful New Year!
I read all of them … I’d go with Gillian Flynn or Wild!
Good choices! I loved Gone Girl too and had never read her before. I also loved Wild, it rocked my world! I am about to explore fantasy, I think I will give Game of Thrones a try, but not for my first book. I think my first book will be something from Heather’s List (the Indigo President) she picks great books and she highly recommends between The Light between Oceans by M.L. Stedman. SHe said it was the best book she read last year, so I am going to give it a go! Happy Reading!
Hopefully, I’ll finish “My Bookstore: Writers Celebrate Their Favorite Places to Browse, Read, and Shop” as my first book of 2013. I like to add significance to a lot of things so I give this a lot of thought, too.
I loved The Twelve, I highly recommend that one.
Great idea for a post. I am trying to decide if I should start reading Once We Were Brothers.(my book club book for the month) or read the second book in the Delirium Trilogy, Pandemonium. looking forward to reading both of them. Happy New Years!
I haven’t even read Passages yet, so you’re one up on me there! My first book of 2013 was a re-read of A Little Princess. I’m nearing the end of my 2nd – Entwined by Heather Dixon. I guess we’re going with a princess theme this year!
I’m starting off the year picking “Seven Wonders” by Adam Christopher again and getting past page 2 🙂
On the non-fiction front my first book is “James Bond FAQ” from Hal Leonard Books
