Good morning.Here in central Minnesota we have only a dusting of snow… seriously, that makes me deliriously happy.
Snow…
not a fan.
Perhaps you may think for a person who is as anti-snow as myself would have chosen a different place to live other than MINNESOTA then…
but here is the kicker…
Spring through Fall here are AWESOME! The air is crisp and I can smell the signs of things to come…. warm air, rollerblading, biking, sitting on the deck reading…
wow…. I miss it already.
I wish I had an attitude like Lorelei Gilmore when it comes to snow…
Anyway…. I always look forward to January 1 because that is when I read my first book of the year. That has been a tradition for years – long before blogging. I usually start it New Years Eve but I finish on New Years Day thus being the first book I read of the year. AND – it is always a treat, a re – read like last year (Lauren Kate rocks! ) and in 2010, well… I was in the mood for Harry… or one that I have simply been dying to read….
this year I have my eye on City Of Fallen Angels…. but I am also thinking maybe Divergent… AND it will also mark my first book of 2012 on the Reading map…..
oh the possibilities…. 😛

I adore snow, and while we get a fair amount in Kentucky, it’s nothing compared to what blankets your state. So feel free to sent id my way anytime!

I enjoy snow, but wouldn’t want to face it everyday throughout the winter, or deal with plowing, shoveling, etc.

I love snow! In fact, the more it grinds things down to a halt, the more I like it! I like the way it forces everyone to slow down. I like the quiet. I like the way it blankets everything cleanly. If it’s powder, I love to ski it. If it’s pack, I like to build snowmen. If it’s just a dusting or a flurry, I like wearing black fleece and catching flakes 🙂
But back to things bookish. My first book of the year is going to be The Scarlet Letter (by Nathaniel Hawthorne.) It’s a Classic that I have actually never read! I’m going to try and read more Classics in 2012 and this is going to be my Inaugural read. I plan on starting on Mew Year’s Day and since it’s a long week-end, hopefully have it finished and a post up by the third. We’ll see!
Well it definitely makes me slow down…. I think I am part bear… I would rather hibernate 😀

When I lived in MI I complained about how much it snowed now that I live in TN I complain about lack of snow go figure.
I do plan my first book of the year. I think this year is going to be A Discovery of Witches.
That sounds like a great book to start the year off with Amanda!
I used to love snow when I was a kid but I never thought it was magical like Lorelai does. Now, snow just worries me. I don’t mind a light dusting because it makes everything look pretty-as long as it doesn’t affect the roads!
I’ve never planned out my first book of the year but it sounds like a great idea! I don’t usually celebrate New Year’s so I stay home on New Year’s Eve and watch movies. One year I did a marathon of the Lord of the Rings trilogy. I suggest Divergent for your first book of the year-it is my favorite of this year so far. Now I will have to think of what I shall read for my first book…
Christina I do not like the cold, the slippery, THE COLD, the wet…. yeah that about covers it.
I think I am going to order Divergent tonight. 😀

I never thought much about what I’m reading before blogging. Add review books into that and I’m thinking about what’s next a lot. I did try to plan out my books needed for challenges this year but only because I’m trying to read them from my shelves instead of amazon’s 😉
I think it would be good for me to read a review book right away and get a review post up quickly, maybe it will set the tone for the rest of the year. That said, I’m sure I’ll end up grabbing something that sounds good “right now”.
Don’t have plans, just the usually weekend stuff….TV, computer, books….

We have not had a snow yet here is West MI. But it is coming this weekend (supposedly). Read Divergent Shelia! It is so awesome. My first book will probably be The Scottish Prisoner by Diana Gabaldon.
Thats two votes for Divergent… I think I will need to do just that 😀 I have yet to read Diana Gabaldon….. so sad!
I grew up in Ohio and love snow, but have lived in Florida for over 20 years. I miss the snow so much and want to go back north when I hear of a snow storm.
I’m trying to get through all my current book reading obligations so I can pick a first book of 2012, if not, I’ll choose one I already have for review.
Oh Vicki… no…. really? You can have it all. You have to give yourself a break for the first book of the year Vicki, pick one you have been wanting to read badly! 😀

I am VERY careful about which book I choose as the first book of the year. In 2010, the first book ended up in my Top 10 (Angel’s Game by Carlos Ruiz Zafon). In 2011, however, I chose a popular YA that ended up missing the mark. I feel like the first book sets the bar, is a prelude of things to come, and hopefully starts the year off with a bang.
I’m not sure what I will start with – probably one of the books I WANTED to read in 2011 but didn’t get to (In the Garden of Beasts, The Art of Fielding, The Tiger’s Wife or Francisco Goldman’s Say Her Name). Then again, I may want something a bit lighter, a YA by Cassandra Clare maybe…hmm.
I’m looking forward to seeing what you choose!!

I don’t usually plan for the first book of the year. But Divergent is on my stack too. Maybe we should do a read-along. As a native Minnesotan, I am not particularly fond of snow either. It is pretty to look at but no fun at all to drive in. Have a great holiday season.

I never really plan my first book of the year, but I LOVE the idea of doing that. Maybe I will this year and grab one of the Margaret Atwood books I’ve been longing to read.

Two years ago, my first read of the year was Saving CeeCee Honeycutt. I loved it. Now I try to read a heartwarming book on New Year’s Eve. Last year’s read was okay but not one that blew me away like CeeCee. I am trying to figure out what the book for me will be this year.
CeeCee was awesome! I try to plan really carefully so that first book is a for sure win 😀
I’m still trying to embrace the MN winter after 7.5 years. My husband who was born here still doesn’t like it… Funny you said above “the book sets the mood”, to me, my mood dictates my books! So I have no idea what the first book would be. I did enjoy Divergent though!

What a great idea! My first read for 2011 was a book that I barely remember now. I don’t know what book I want to start 2012 with but I want it to be special and something I already own. Off to think. . .
I have it narrowed down to three and I am excited to reveal which one I chose on January 1!!!
Divergent would be a really fun way to start out 2012. It’s not the best written book, but it *is* a lot of fun! And addicting!

I think I’ll do Darker Still as my first book of the year, but it depends on my mood. I always reserve the right to change my mind. 😉
