The Eyre Of My Ways…

Ok…. it is time.  I am going to tackle Jane Eyre.  Well… the book that is…. not really Jane, or at least not yet… it may come to that later, but for now… I want to start the book and hopefully this 4th time of trying to read this book that this time… THIS TIME I will be able to actually finish it.

SO what am I doing differently?

  1. baby steps, I am going to challenge myself to read 10 pages of Jane a day starting today.  My book here is 462 pages (UGH….) so my goal is 46 days from today at the latest.  I can read more pages per day but not less.
  2. Keep it fun.  I will give weekly updates of the progress.  I also mean to record my book mood during this read as well.  If I am bitter, bored, amused, defiant, annoyed, interested…. you will know.

The goal – is to finish if not as myself and Jane Eyre being friends, then at least we will be acquaintances.

Game on Jane. Game on.

  1. Good luck! This is one of my favorite books ever, so I hope you end up loving it eventually.

  2. I love Jane Eyre but it took me years from when I bought it to actually finish it (I started it when I was 12 but didn’t finish it till I was in my mid-twenties). I wasn’t ready to read it when I first began so I waited more than 10 years and it was finally the right time and the book just flew by. I hope this is the right time for you too! Good luck! I will be cheering you on to the finish line :)

  3. Why don’t you set up a challenge and see if you can get a few book buddies to read this book with you! I’d like to take ol’ Jane myself! :) Just a thought!

  4. The beginning is difficult. Ya gotta get to where she’s leaving school, in my opinion, and then I have a hard time putting it down. I bet enough of us love Jane Eyre to reread it. You almost tempt me!

  5. I cannot praise the novel enough. I have read and re-read Jane Eyre for the past three decades (I just re-read it a few weeks ago). Jane Eyre is one of my all time favourite books and I hope you will come to enjoy Miss Jane Eyre. Happy reading Sheila!

  6. Good luck! I love Jane Eyre–it was my favorite of the Classics I read last year. I watched the 1940s movie before picking up the book, and I found it helped me a lot to get into the reading; I kept wanting to read on to see how the scenes in the book compared to scenes I remembered from the movie. I look forward to seeing how it goes for you. :)

  7. Yes, small achievable goals is the ticket….good luck!

  8. I love Jane! And she’s not grumpy and stern–she just has to be very self-controlled to survive, so it’s all under the surface. She is serious. And she might not know how to be very cheerful–she’s had to fight for whatever she’s got. But as an Official Cheerful Person, I love her, so I hope you can get to know her too!

  9. That’s a great way to tackle it! I’m rooting for you!

  10. Good luck and I hope you find it enjoyable this go ’round and that you and Jane end up the best of friends! Charlotte Bronte’s novels are among my all-time favorites (along with about 1000 other books) so I wholeheartedly believe in the power of JANE!!!

    • I hope so too…. maybe we could do coffee or something together? Certainly not clothe shopping though… her tastes are awful…LOL… unless…. I could change her, get her some Silver jeans, a couple great shirts, maybe some skinny jeans?

  11. I agree with the others — it’s a favorite book of mine, but admittedly the beginning is very tough to get through….It sets the foundation of her harsh, unloved childhood. Once you get over the “hump” I do hope you will find the book hard to put down and you will warm up to Jane.
    Good luck!

  12. I was honestly surprised that I liked Jane Eyre as much as I did, and I really did enjoy it. I’ve tried reading Jane Austen and could not get through them. They just didn’t really appeal to me. I finally did finish Pride and Prejudice but never did finish Persuasion. Have you read any Charlotte Bronte? Wuthering Heights looks interesting.

I look forward to seeing your progress with Jane Eyre. It has a little mystery, intrigue and romance all set in the moors of Britain. Does that help?

  13. Oops, I meant Emily Bronte (the author of Wuthering Heights).

  14. Totally funny…my book group pre ordered the book club cook book to use in our book group, I just got The Thorn and The Blossom (and Henry’s Sisters) in the mail and my book club just finished Jane Eyre for our Jan read…I just thought it funny…

  15. I love this book so much. Once you get into it, you will hopefully find the strength to continue!

  16. I’ve actually loved Jane since I was about 12 or 13, so I hope this time is the charm for you! If not, at least you can say you tried. Again. :-) Good luck!

  17. I’m thinking about doing the same thing with Proust! Bit by bit…

Although, I should admit a crime of my own: I’ve not read either of the Brontes. :S

  18. I know I mentioned before how much I love this book, and have from the second I picked it up as required reading back in high school. So from that perspective, I’m not a whole lot of help. But – I’m rereading right now myself and would be happy to participate in discussions and offer my encouragement!!!

  19. Good luck! I hope you grow to like the book. I’ve always liked reading it, it gives me lots of things to think about in terms of feminism and agency and love and relationships.

  20. Good luck, Sheila! Jane is one of my favorites.

  21. Ok, girlfriend, I got my book and I’m ready to dive in – how far are you along?????

  22. You can do it – I know you can. Go Sheila Go!

  23. Love the title of the challenge! Good luck! :)

Hmmmm... what do you think?
